Artist Statement:
My creative work is grounded in the preservation of memories that are part of my personal history and identity. Raised by artists and storytellers, I was continually pushed and encouraged to be creative and sentimental. With a stronger memory of my childhood than most people, I have found that my memories are often what I cherish most. In my creative practice, I preserve my past by using old family heirlooms and artifacts or freezing specific moments in a two-dimensional plane.
Many of my concepts are influenced by the ways my memories and childhood continue to reconstruct and adapt my life experiences today. I explore these ideas through various media, including sculpture, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, and painting. In sculpture, I alter the appearance of found objects or recreate familiar forms using unconventional materials or processes. This allows viewers to experience nostalgia while challenging them to reconsider the object in a new way.
Printmaking pushes me to do more than recreate an existing image; it requires crafting an image that is a strong enough vessel to carry its concept without spoon-feeding the audience. My prints often draw on specific moments in time, packaging conversations into images that memorialize moments for later reflection. Whether we are proud of our past or view it through a lens of mourning, it shapes us, and I have found there is always a way to benefit from processing it further.
