My professor told me to paint a giant non-objective painting, had me make a bunch of studies, only liked the ones I despised, and then sent us on spring break. This particular spring break was spent in Washington D.C. (or as I prefer to call it, the capital of the free world). We worked with church planters, and I was enamored by all the ins and outs of working in a big city and helping a church plant. In the span of a week, I prayed endlessly for the Lord to show me why I felt so drawn to that form of ministry. I had never felt such a direct calling on my life as I had throughout the days of that trip. However, at the end of the week, I had to go home and paint.
I approached the non-objective in a totally new way and let the marks guide the tools in my hand. I finished with a big blue vacancy down the middle. I thought it looked just as strong and stark as the Lord’s calling on my life had felt over that week, so I left it there to remind me to revisit that calling when the time came.
